Take a hands-on tour of Adelaide University’s leading acoustic research facilities with Will Robertson and the university’s Acoustics, Vibrations and Control research group. This technical tour offers delegates an opportunity to participate in practical demonstrations of acoustic testing and measurement procedures, conducted according to Australian and International Standards. You’ll see the instruments and techniques used in cutting-edge acoustic research and measurement, and gain practical insights into the methods that underpin acoustics engineering. Step inside one of Adelaide’s most iconic performance venues to experience a hands-on critical listening exercise. Beginning with a brief tour of the Town Hall’s architectural history and heritage, you’ll then participate in a guided acoustic experience while a professional organist plays the historic Town Hall Organ. Using provided worksheets, you’ll learn to critically assess the room’s acoustic characteristics, sitting in specific locations to appreciate how the space influences sound. The session concludes with detailed acoustic reverberation measurements, giving you data-driven insights into what your ears are hearing. A perfect blend of heritage, performance and acoustics.

Explore the acoustic design and engineering behind one of Adelaide’s premier performing arts venues. This tour showcases the comprehensive acoustic refurbishment of Her Majesty’s Theatre, with expert commentary from the acoustic engineer who led the internal works and representatives from the audio engineering team. You’ll tour the full theatre from backstage to roof-top mechanical spaces, with particular focus on the auditorium and how its acoustic design supports world-class performances. Gain insights into the intersection of heritage preservation and modern acoustic performance requirements. Note: Full access to all areas is subject to theatre operational requirements on the day.

Discover the diverse soundscapes of Adelaide on this guided acoustic journey, curated by international soundscape experts from Australia, the UK, and Japan. The walk will stroll through beautiful Adelaide parklands and the heritage North Adelaide precinct, featuring acoustically significant locations such as St Francis Xavier’s Cathedral and other landmarks, offering multiple perspectives on how urban and natural soundscapes interact. Throughout the experience, you’ll engage with soundscape science using a binaural measurement system to capture authentic acoustic environments. The walk explores both established assessment methods aligned with current standards and innovative approaches emerging from cutting-edge soundscape research. This is a unique opportunity to explore how acoustic environments shape our urban experience, informed by both best practice and the latest research developments in soundscape assessment.
